Musical Movements!
How’s it going Rugrat! Welcome to the Sensazn HQ’s!

You’ve been DJing since the age of 14, were you a big fan of the Rugrats?! (Ha!)

Ha…I do remember watching it when I was at school and yes, I was a big fan!

You stand out from a lot of other DJs in terms of the type of music you mix, it’s everything! How important is that right now in this scene?

I genuinely love all types of music and enjoy the element of mixing different genres together, I see it of great importance right now as there are so many different genres and newer one’s being created all the time! This has led to a more eclectic and fuller scene.I put my emphasis on playing to the crowd, unlike many DJ's whom play what they want to hear! So for me it’s about working on reading the crowd, understanding its diversity and catering for all the ears, so I can get everyone’s feet moving!

Everyone seems to be a DJ these days, and you’ve been doing it for years…what’s the real talent you need to make it?

Dedication. I can’t stress the importance of that word enough. It’s about staying in with your decks when all your mates are going out and practicing, practicing, practicing. I agree that a lot of people want to be or plug themselves as being DJs but it’s the ones that are†creative and open to new ways, new sounds and new scenes that seem to "make it".

You’ve taken it one step further and released Mix CDs, how important is that in this day and age?

As you've mentioned there are so many DJs, that you have to work on getting your name out as much as you can and fortunately I love creating mix CDs so it’s something that can boost my profile and keep me creative. It gives me the chance to try new mixes and not have†to worry about a dance floor of people evacuating to the bar!

You’ve DJ’d at some of the biggest clubs in London as well as supporting major acts like Chipmunk, Jay Sean, Wiley to name a few, what’s been the most outstanding?

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some great performers and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. But I gotta say that I love the festivals the most, the vibes are amazing...LMHR in Stoke On Trent was MAD as was Astonbury in brum. Notting Hill is always crazy!

How’s the international scene looking for you?

It’s going great, I did Antigua summer just gone and that was incredible!  I’m in touch with a few clubs in Ibiza so stay locked for further news on that! With my fanbase growing, my mix CDs getting all over the place†and the Rugrat site up and running, 2010 looks like my passport is going to feel the effects!

You’re also repping the community with your work with Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR), how’s that going?

I’m constantly in touch with LMHR and it’s an organisation that means a lot to me and I will always try my upmost to highlight the good work they do. It’s important for anyone in any high profile position to give back to his or her communities and keep people progressive, positive and proactive.

Most of the time it’s artists and MCs who are asked about how the scene has changed, what’s your views as a DJ?

Well music itself is always changing and evolving and that I feel shall never stop. The UK scene has been ready to blow for some time and with all this homegrown talent dominating our charts! I have to give a big shout out to Jay Sean for being the first UK urban act to ever hit the top spot of the US billboard charts. That’s a huge achievement and shows us anything is possible.

We’re into 2010 now, and looking back at the last 10 years, what’s really stood out for you?

Well being a DJ its gotta be about the music, the rise of Electro and Dubstep, the British Indie scene getting†massive led by the Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles, etc. The vast amount of UK acts in the charts from Chipmunk to N-Dubz to Pixie Lott. And of course the X-Factor and all the other reality TV talent shows that have had a major effect culturally as well as musically.

And what are you looking at in the next ten years?!

Well other than blitzing the scene with pioneering new mixes and breaking down musical borders through the art of the mix, I’d like to see the expansion of my DJ agency Musical Movements both nationally and internationally. Maybe become the first ever DJ to open Glastonbury! Who knows what the future holds, I’m just gonna keep on being the best I can be.

Any New Years’ Resolutions that you’ve already broken?

No. I don’t bother with them, one of my close friends has his birthday on New Years Day, my yearly resolution is to get him as drunk as possible!

Rugrat’s a name you may be quite familiar with.
DJ Rugrat is a name you may not be so familiar with..yet! This is one DJ who learnt to cause mischief on the decks at a very tender age of 14! With love for a wide range of music and getting his ears down to mixing up various genres, Rugrat knows how to read a crowd, cater for diverse ears and get everyone moving! Proof of his work can be seen at packed out club-nights in which everyone’s feet is moving...in the right direction!
